WHY does a cat damage wood or furniture?

When a cat is cutting wood or furniture, for instance, it is trying to get rid of the old, blunted upper claw shell. This shell will eventually peel off as the claw grows, and by getting rid of it, the cat will get a new sharp tool for defense and attack.

Hence, cats so often pull the cloth on upholstered furniture – the peeled off claw’s top layer gets stuck in it even better than in wood.
