WHY do camels spit?

Once in a while, a camel may have a food lump in its mouth that is excessively large. In such a case, the camel may spit without aiming at anyone, which is rare. Typically, the spitting is done deliberately, at a specific target, which is hit with amazing accuracy.

Spitting is also used for self-defense, protection of cubs. Camels actually have no obvious enemies in the natural environment, but cubs can be attacked by wolves.
